There are few things more satisfying than going into a book expecting a normal, humdrum experience and instead being tantalized by wonderful characters and an excellent storyline. Dream Factory by Brad Barkley & Heather Hepler ![]() ![]() Structurally, the novel sometimes sags: Charles tends to move into the points of view of secondary characters, which leads to some repetition. While the chapters featuring Lily are snappy and often amusing, especially as she begins to adopt Parisian airs, they play a distinctly secondary role to those concerning Odile's life during the war. When Lily's mother becomes ill, Lily grows close to her previously frosty next-door neighbor Odile, who moved to Montana as a bride immediately after the war ended. Her story is juxtaposed with that of a teenager named Lily who, in 1983, lives in a small rural town in Montana. As the war proceeds and the Nazis take over the city, she fears for her twin brother, who has been captured by the Germans, places herself in danger by transporting books to Jewish patrons who are forbidden to visit the library, and begins to question some of her boyfriend's actions. She lands her dream job assisting patrons of the American Library, which serves both foreigners and Parisians, and falls in love with one of the police officers her father brings home for dinner. In 1939, Odile Souchet, the daughter of the captain of a police precinct, has just finished library school. ![]() ![]() ![]() World War II Paris during the German occupation forms the setting for an intelligent and sensuously rich novel of a young woman's coming-of-age. ![]() ![]() ![]() They come back the next morning, spot Mrs. Will’s father, a janitor at the library, who revels in spending his life among its books, senses something dark as well. ![]() The boys, Jim and and his friend Will Halloway, spy it out as it arrives at 3 am, taking shape out of the dark clouds of the night. The personal and the social aspects draw close, as we watch the characters struggling with their everyday lives. But his trip also tells us something about the history and the present state of Hungary. His story is also a road trip, physically and mentally, back to his hometown, to his family, and to personal memories – deep in his mind. The protagonist (or protagonists) of my book tries to recall his decisions from this point of view to understand how he became the person he finds himself to be in a moment at the beginning of the novel. Every decision is a necessary abdication the same time we choose something, we lose something. This book tells a story about the people we will never become but almost did – as referred to by the title. Thank you! I would say perhaps that this is a novel about our other personality, the one we didn’t choose when we made the decisions we made.
